In terms of juice, Dev Hynes is a man who squeezes every last drop of it out of himself. He’s worked with everyone from Basement Jaxx to Kristen Wiig and he’s a couple days away from being the opening act on a massive Florence and the Machine tour. Having whirled through a number of musical styles, from the arty dance-punk of Test Icicles to the variety-pack of sounds he delivered under the name Lightspeed Champion, his current mood as Blood Orange finds him pulling it back a bit, dialed in to a melancholy, rhythm-riding sexuality that conjures up seedy late-night escapades in smoke-filled cities. Simply put, this is make-out music for the ill-intentioned.
